"Sometimes at evening I sit, looking out on the big Missouri. The sun sets, and dusk steals over the water. In the shadows I seem again to see our Indian village, with smoke curling upward from the earth lodges; and in the river's roar I hear the yells of the warriors, the laughter of little children as of old. It is but an old woman's dream. Again I see but shadows and hear only the roar of the river; and tears come into my eyes. Our Indian life, I know, is gone forever."Wilson's 1921 book "Waheenee: An Indian Girl's Story" is the true life story of Waheenee, one of the few surviving members of the Hidatsas Indian Tribe which lived along the Missouri River in the 1800s. In 1908, Gilbert Livingstone Wilson and his artist brother were sent by the American Museum of Natural History, to begin cultural studies among the Hidatsas with whom they lived for ten summers. It is this same tribe that artist Catlin had visited in 1832 followed the next year by Maximilian of Wiet who visited them with the artist Bodmer. Smallpox nearly exterminated the two tribes in 1837-8. The survivors, a mere remnant, removed to Fort Berthold reservation on the Missouri River where they still dwell in the early 1900s and to this day.Wilson writes:"The stories in this book were told me by Buffalo-Bird Woman (Wakeenee). Indians have the gentle custom of adopting very dear friends by relationship terms. By such adoption Buffalo-Bird Woman is my mother. It is with real pleasure that I offer to readers these stories from the life of my Indian mother."Contents I. A LITTLE INDIAN GIRLII. WINTER CAMPIII. THE BUFFALO-SKIN CAPIV. STORY TELLINGV.
